The POCONO GARLIC & HARVEST FESTIVAL is CELEBRATING its 25th ANNIVERSARY
Shawnee on Delaware, PA – Summer is here and local garlic growers are predicting a great harvest. This is in anticipation of the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the Pocono Garlic & Harvest Festival. The annual pilgrimage of garlic fest lovers is held on Labor Day Weekend, August 31st & September 1st 2019, coinciding with the regional hard neck garlic harvest. The festival is held on the grounds of Shawnee Mountain Ski Area and gates open daily at 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
Since it’s inception in 1994, behind Saint Luke’s Church of Stroudsburg, the event grew like the bulbous culinary delight that it celebrated. Still hosted by the original four farmers who wanted to share their passion of the garlic harvest, the group has now paved a way for garlic enthusiasts of all kinds to indulge their garlic fantasies. Many imaginative culinary garlic dishes have been developed through the festival over the years that have became a favorite to returning festival goers, including garlic ice cream, garlic shaved ice, on site freshly prepared garlic whole roasted pig, garlic crepes, roasted garlic cheese pierogies, garlic pickles, garlic crab cakes and even garlic ice cream.
“People get really passionate about garlic. It’s infused in our culture, it’s in just about every ethnic dish that you can imagine, Polish, Italian, Mediterranean, regional American, the international list of foods that is too long to mention all, but it is a common dominator when you think about a delicious meal. I believe it’s an ingredient of longevity. Where else can you taste your way around the world in just one day!” Explained Sharon Rothman 2019 PGHF Communications Manager.
Proud to be known as the “slinkiest” food festival for a quarter of a century, the event attracts thousands of garlic breathing diners seeking food laced with garlic. Every year the festival makes sure that it delivers the best possible selection of garlic and garlic related vendors. The gastronomic garlic extravaganza is what attendees expect and for their 25th anniversary the venue will host over sixty vendors selling one of a kind garlic laced prepared foods, art, regional garlic to buy, growing seminars, cooking demonstrations and our popular garlic eating contest. Last year’s winner ate 3.5 ounces of garlic within a minute. Practice eating your garlic!
“Planning for the 25th Anniversary started in 2018, as the festival committee wants this year to be special. Some of the entertainment line-up has changed and they have added some great surprises for true garlic lovers. The festival is fun for all ages and performers from far and near come to the festival. The grounds are filled with magicians, jugglers and strolling musicians through out the day. Every day is a continuous jamboree of garlicky entertainment, which is included with the cost of admission and held on four stages.
